As the year draws to a close, December is the perfect time to reflect on the clutter—both physical and emotional—that may be weighing us down. Starting the New Year with a lighter load can have transformative effects on our mental health and wellbeing. Simplifying life by decluttering and reducing possessions can lead to a sense of peace and alignment, reconnecting us with what truly matters.

I recently returned from Morocco, where I witnessed the beauty of a simpler life. While exploring, I met Sara, a Berber woman who lives with her two grandchildren in just three small tents. Despite having so little by Western standards, Sara’s life is rich with resourcefulness, connection, and a sense of purpose. Shepherds in the area consider their flocks of sheep and goats their wealth, rather than material possessions. Donkeys are a common sight, used to collect rubbish along narrow streets, and plastic water bottles are reused for carrying oil.

This sustainable way of life highlights the contrast between simplicity and the often overwhelming complexity of modern consumerism. It serves as a reminder that less can indeed be more.

The Mental Burden of “Too Much”

In Western culture, our lives are often filled with too much:

  • Too much stuff: Endless possessions that take up space and energy to maintain.
  • Too many commitments: A packed schedule that leaves little room for rest or self-care.
  • Too much stimulation: Constant notifications, advertising, and digital demands.

This “excess” creates stress, decision fatigue, and an ongoing sense of dissatisfaction. We’re left chasing happiness in external things instead of cultivating it from within.

Why Simplicity Improves Wellbeing

A simpler life allows us to:

  1. Reduce Stress: Decluttering reduces decision fatigue, making daily life feel more manageable.
  2. Increase Presence: With fewer distractions, it’s easier to focus on the present moment.
  3. Enhance Creativity: Minimalism frees mental space, sparking creativity and new ideas.
  4. Improve Energy Flow: A clear space can foster a sense of peace, both physically and emotionally.

Lessons from Morocco

Sara’s story reminded me how deeply connected we are to our environment and the energy of our surroundings. In her minimalist life, every possession serves a purpose, and nothing is wasted. This intentionality is something we can all strive for.

Bringing Simplicity into Your Life

  1. Declutter Your Space: Start with one area, like your closet or kitchen. Ask yourself if each item truly serves you.
  2. Reflect on Priorities: Are your commitments aligned with your values? Let go of anything that doesn’t bring joy or fulfillment.
  3. Reconnect with Nature: Spend time outdoors, away from screens, to ground yourself and recharge.
  4. Seek Support: Sometimes simplifying life means addressing internal clutter too, such as stress, trauma, or limiting beliefs.

How Kinesiology Supports Simplicity

In my work as a kinesiologist, I help clients simplify not just their physical spaces but their inner worlds. Kinesiology works holistically, addressing energetic imbalances that can make life feel more complicated than it needs to be.

By using techniques like muscle testing, emotional stress release, and energetic balancing, we can:

  • Release attachments to “stuff” that no longer serves you.
  • Clear mental and emotional clutter that keeps you stuck in unhealthy patterns.
  • Create a sense of alignment and flow that mirrors the simplicity you desire in your outer world.

A Fresh Start

As you prepare for the New Year, consider how simplifying your life—physically, emotionally, and energetically—can bring greater peace and balance. Whether it’s decluttering your home, reassessing your priorities, or seeking holistic support through kinesiology, taking steps toward simplicity can create a ripple effect of wellbeing.

Let Sara’s story and the Berber lifestyle serve as inspiration: A life of less can be a life of more—more connection, more purpose, and more joy.

If you’re ready to make changes but feel unsure where to start, kinesiology can provide the clarity and support you need. Reach out to explore how we can work together for a simpler, more fulfilling life.
