In our busy lives, it’s easy to forget the simple joys of creativity and play. As adults, we often prioritise our responsibilities and obligations, leaving little time for ourselves. However, a recent experience reminded me of the profound benefits of reconnecting with our creative selves and the importance of making time to play. Attending an art journaling workshop led by local award-winning artist Jade Forder, owner of Creative Abyss, was a transformative experience that emphasized these very principles.
The Art Journaling Workshop Experience
The workshop began with a process designed to clear our minds. Jade encouraged us to get all our thoughts out of our heads and onto paper. This exercise was about raw expression; we scrawled our thoughts without punctuation or capital letters, allowing a free flow of ideas. This act of unstructured writing was cathartic, providing a sense of release from the mental clutter we often carry.
Once our thoughts were on paper, we painted over them. This symbolic act of covering our thoughts with layers of paint helped to shift our focus from the chaos within to the creative process before us. The next step involved a meditation centered on the theme of trust. As we meditated, we reflected on what trust means to us and whom or what we need to trust more in our lives. This introspective moment set the stage for the next layer of our artwork, which we painted with different media, adding depth and texture to our creations.
The end product was a unique A4-sized artwork, personal to each individual. The layers of writing, painting, and reflection created a piece that was not only aesthetically pleasing but also deeply meaningful. Each attendee left with a tangible reminder of their inner creativity and the importance of trust in their lives.
The Importance of Tapping into Creativity
Everyone who attended the workshop expressed a common need: to tap back into their creativity and make time for themselves. This need is something many of us can relate to. As children, we naturally engage in creative play, but as adults, we often neglect this aspect of our lives. Yet, creativity is not just about making art; it’s about exploring our thoughts and emotions, finding new solutions to problems, and experiencing joy and fulfillment.
The Benefits of Creativity and Play
- Stress Relief: Engaging in creative activities can reduce stress by providing an outlet for self-expression and a break from daily routines.
- Improved Mental Health: Creative expression has been linked to improved mental health, offering a way to process emotions and gain insights into our thoughts and feelings.
- Enhanced Problem-Solving Skills: Creativity encourages us to think outside the box and find innovative solutions, skills that are valuable in both personal and professional settings.
- Increased Happiness: Making time for creative play can boost our mood and overall sense of well-being, reminding us of the simple joys of life.
The Role of Trust in Creativity
Trust was a central theme of the workshop, and it’s an essential component of the creative process. Trusting ourselves, our instincts, and the process itself can help us overcome the fear of failure and perfectionism that often hinders creativity. By letting go of these fears, we can fully immerse ourselves in the creative experience and reap its benefits.
Making Time for Play
One of the most significant takeaways from the workshop was the importance of making time for play. As adults, we often prioritize work and responsibilities, leaving little room for activities that bring us joy. However, making time for creative play is not a luxury but a necessity. It’s essential for maintaining our mental and emotional well-being.
