Why Your Anxiety, Stress and Emotions May Be Affecting Your Digestion

Have you ever noticed your digestion worsens when you’re stressed?

This is not your imagination.

In clinic, I see this connection constantly.

Your Gut and Brain Are Constantly Communicating

Your digestive system and nervous system communicate continuously through a complex network involving:

  • the vagus nerve
  • neurotransmitters
  • hormones
  • the microbiome
  • and the autonomic nervous system

This communication system is often referred to as:

the gut-brain axis.

Interestingly, studies suggest the gut communicates to the brain far more frequently than the brain communicates to the gut.

This is something I was also taught extensively during my Kinesiology training.

Which means:
your emotional state may directly influence your digestion.

And your digestion may directly influence your emotional wellbeing.

Stress Changes Digestion

When the nervous system perceives stress, the body shifts into survival mode.

And when survival mode activates, digestion becomes less of a priority.

The body redirects energy toward protection rather than:

  • nutrient absorption
  • digestive enzyme production
  • gut repair
  • detoxification
  • or healthy bowel function

This is why chronic stress may contribute to:

  • bloating
  • IBS symptoms
  • food intolerances
  • gut inflammation

Many people try to “fix the gut” without addressing the nervous system underneath it.

But the body cannot fully heal while remaining stuck in survival mode.

Most people are surprised to learn that a large percentage of serotonin—the neurotransmitter associated with mood and wellbeing—is produced within the gut.

The gut microbiome also influences:

  • mood
  • anxiety
  • inflammation
  • energy
  • stress resilience
  • and cognitive function

This is why gut health and emotional health are inseparable.

Your emotional wellbeing affects your digestion.
And your digestion affects your emotional wellbeing.

One thing I often observe through Kinesiology is how deeply emotional stress affects the digestive system.

And the body often reflects this through the gut.

In Chinese 5-Element theory—which I integrate into my Kinesiology work—different emotions are associated with different organ systems.

And the gut often reflects this internal stress.
